DENISON

University of Saskatchewan Leaf 17

The vellum of this late-thirteenth century English psalter was once nearly white, but now appears dirty. The ink for the bulk of the text is brown, with blue, orange (or weak red), green, and white in the decorations. Gold and silver are both used, and the silver has tarnished. There are dragons, foliage, flowers, and pointed ivy as marginal decorations. Illuminated initials begin each verse, and bars are placed at the end of lines to complete them when the text is too short to fill them; these lines include both geometric designs and additional dragons. The leaf measures 17 x 11 cm. See Denison University Leaf 17 for more information about this manuscript.

Text: Psalms 36:35-37:5 (recto). A scan of the verso is not currently available.

Dómine, ne in furóre tuo árguas me, neque in ira tua corrípias me:
Quóniam sagíttæ tuæ infíxæ sunt mihi, et confirmásti super me manum tuam.
Non est sánitas in carne mea, a fácie iræ tuæ; non est pax óssibus meis, a fácie peccatórum meórum:

[Psalms 36:35-37:5]

...exalted, and lifted up like the cedars of Libanus. 36 And I passed by, and lo, he was not: and I sought him and his place was not found. 37 Keep innocence, and behold justice: for there are remnants for the peaceable man. 38 But the unjust shall be destroyed together: the remnants of the wicked shall perish. 39 But the salvation of the just is from the Lord, and he is their protector in the time of trouble. 40 And the Lord will help them and deliver them: and he will rescue them from the wicked, and save them, because they have hoped in him.

2 Rebuke me not, O Lord, in thy indignation; nor chastise me in thy wrath. 3 For thy arrows are fastened in me: and thy hand hath been strong upon me. 4 There is no health in my flesh, because of thy wrath: there is no peace for my bones, because of my sins. 5 For my iniquities are gone over my head...
