Cleveland Institute of Art Leaf 23

This leaf comes from a French breviary of the mid-fourteenth century. It measures 18 x 12 cm. The gold on the leaf has an unusual foil appearance when compared to that of other leaves in the portfolio; the red and blue tracery escapes like stray hairs into the upper and lower margins. Compare the decoration along the left of each column to that of Leaf 18, from a French breviary of a generation or two earlier. See Denison University Leaf 23 for more information about this manuscript.
